Trieste 2021: Update

Between 14 and 18 June 2021, the city of Trieste and the Trieste Joyce School – Università degli studi di Trieste will play host to the 27th International James Joyce Symposium. This year’s gathering will be a hybrid or blended conference with a reduced presence in Trieste and most participants joining over digital platforms. The keynotes are Eric Bulson, Catherine Flynn, and Cóilín Parsons. The invited writer is Colm Tóibín.

 

Eric Bulson is Andrew W. Mellon All-Claremont Chair in the Humanities at Claremont Graduate University. He is the author of Novels, Maps Modernity: The Spatial Imagination, 1850-2000 (Routledge, 2006), The Cambridge Introduction to James Joyce (Cambridge, 2007), Little Magazine, World Form (Columbia, 2016) and ‘Ulysses’ by Numbers (Columbia, 2020).

Catherine Flynn is Associate Professor of English at UC Berkeley and the author of James Joyce and the Matter of Paris (Cambridge, 2019). She co-edited with Richard Brown a special issue of James Joyce Quarterly, titled “Joycean Avant-Gardes” (2017). She is currently at work on an edited volume with CUP titled New Joyce Studies: Twenty-First Century Critical Revisions

Cóilín Parsons is Associate Professor of English at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. He is the author of The Ordnance Survey and Modern Irish Literature (Oxford, 2016), which was awarded the Robert Rhodes Prize for best book on literature by the American Conference of Irish Studies, and the Alpha Sigma Nu book award of the Jesuit Honor Society, as well as shortlisted for the Modernist Studies Association First Book Prize.

Colm Tóibín is Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University. He is the author of ten novels, including the bestselling Brooklyn, winner of the Costa Book Award, two collections of short stories, and many works of criticism. His most recent novel is The Magician (Viking, 2021).
