We are saddened to announce that John Bishop, one of world’s leading Joyce scholars and an authority on Finnegans Wake, passed away on May 15 in upstate New York. Bishop taught a generation of Joyceans at the University of California Berkeley and published the extraordinary Joyce’s Book of the Dark (U of Wisconsin P) in 1986. It remains one of the most important and influential studies of Joyce’s final masterpiece. Its wit, intelligence, and care with language mirror that of the Wake itself and it still opens up new and exciting pathways into the book. Former students and colleagues are organizing a public memorial event that will be held later this summer with details to be announced on the Department of English website at Berkeley. In the meantime, take a moment to read a passage of the Wake and join with us in remembering how John helped us better understand the beauty and humanity of this book.
